The Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage wrote on Twitter: “Jerzy Połomski, a singer who was loved by the public, whose hits were sung by all of Poland, a performing artist renowned for a sense of modesty and professionalism, passed away at 89. May he rest in peace."

In a career spanning more than six decades, Połomski scored many spectacular successes at the National Song Festival in Opole, the International Song Festival in Sopot and as well on foreign tours, which took him to many European countries and Polish diaspora centres in the United States, Canada and Australia.

Born in Radom, south of Warsaw, in 1933, Połomski graduated from the State Higher School of Drama in Warsaw in 1957.

After a brief stint in theatre, he focused on singing, honing his vocal skills under the guidance of prominent singer Wanda Wermińska.

His beautiful baritone, fine diction and elegant stage presence won him millions of fans, and many of his songs, both prewar numbers and settings of texts by lyricists such as Wojciech Młynarski, Agnieszka Osiecka and Adam Kreczmar, became hits.

His discography includes several dozen LPs and CDs.

Last year, due to his increasingly fragile health, Połomski moved to a nursing home for artists and entertainers near Warsaw.

His honours included the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Reborn Poland, the Gold Gloria Artis Medal of Cultural Merit, the Polish recording industry’s Gold Fryderyk Award for Lifetime Achievement, and the Golden Microphone of the Polish-American Artistic Agency in New York.
