The European Commission said on its website that “the aid will take the form of a direct grant of up to approximately EUR 258.7 million (PLN 1.2 billion), which is equal to the total estimated costs for the implementation of the project."
The funds will also be used to "support the establishment of the permanent exhibition of the museum inside the new headquarters,” the EU executive announced.
Under the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, member states can “grant state aid to promote culture and heritage conservation, subject to certain conditions," the Commission noted.
It said it "found that the Polish measure is necessary and appropriate to attain its genuine cultural objective.”
The construction of the Museum of Polish History started in 2018. The facility is expected to be completed in 2025, but a temporary exhibition space is due to be open to visitors in the autumn of this year.
The Museum of Polish History will be part of a complex of museums located at the site of the historic Warsaw Citadel.
The complex will also host a Polish Army Museum, a Museum of Independence, and the Katyn Museum, which commemorates the 1940 massacre of Polish officers by the Soviets.
