"Living monuments to war"

Ukrainian photographer has found an "intimate" and yet dramatic way to expose the tragedy of the war in Ukraine.

Until recently, Ukrainian photographer Marta Syrko had focussed on commercial photography. However, the war in her country has inspired her to expose the brutal effects of war on the bodies of Ukrainian soldiers. She told the Polish Press Agency (PAP):

"I make portraits of the people who have survived the war and the dramatic situations they have gone through. The atmosphere during the photoshoots is very intimate, we have time to talk. This project will continue as long as the war does."

During her interview for the Polish Press Agency, Syrko was asked about the dramatic change in the genre of photography she works in:

"I used to take photos of beautiful models or happy newlyweds. But it's hard to think about photoshoots like that when there is a war going on."
