The musical will be performed on the city's Cathedral Hill in front of a basilica where the famous astronomer is buried.

The production is one of many events being held in Poland and abroad to mark the 550th anniversary of the birth of Copernicus.

Written by Albena Grabowska, with song lyrics by Daniel Wyszygrodzki and music by Tomasz Szymuś, Copernicus is a Kraków Opera production.

The libretto traces the most important events in the life of Copernicus from his studies in Kraków, Padua and Bologna, through his return to Frombork, his pastoral service as a canon, his medical practice, and astronomical research, culminating in the creation of his ground-breaking treatise De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres).

The musical will be included in the repertoire of the Kraków Opera in the autumn.
