"Manru" was staged by the Opéra National de Lorraine in the French city of Nancy in May, directed by Katharina Kastening, in co-production with Germany’s Bühnen Halle. The production was conducted by Marta Gardolińska, who has served as the company’s music director for the past two years and who has taken upon herself to promote - as she says - brilliant Polish music. "Manru" tells the story of the doomed love between a Highland girl and a Gypsy boy, ultimately unable to overcome the differences between them, and the hostility that exists between their two worlds.
