Adapted from Martin Amis's 2014 novel, the film delves into the life of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss and his family, set against the backdrop of the infamous German concentration camp. The film's production involved significant location shooting in Poland, including at the historical site of Auschwitz, Jelenia Góra, and Klimkówka Lake near Gorlice.
Polish co-producer Ewa Puszczyńska emphasized the film's broader thematic focus beyond the Holocaust. She described it as a portrayal of the "banality of evil," offering a timely warning message. This thematic approach has undoubtedly contributed to the film's critical success and its nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best International Feature, and Sound.
The picture’s cinematic acclaim is further highlighted by the nomination of Polish cinematographer Łukasz Żal, who recently received a BAFTA nomination for his work on the same film.
"The Zone of Interest" is set for a general release in Poland on February 9. The Oscar winners will be announced on March 10.
