At 21, Grenda is the youngest of the group, which also includes Britain’s Jonathan Brigg, 39; Roberto Sansuini, 57, from Italy; Matei Gheorghiu, 39, who represents Romania and Finland; and Yves Balmer, 45, representing France and Switzerland.

Grenda’s work, entitled you dream in a language i can’t understand, will be performed alongside those by the four other finalists, in the concluding stage of the competition in mid-November.

Grenda is a third-year student at the Music Academy in Wrocław, southwestern Poland.

A total of 230 compositions by composers of 37 nationalities were submitted to the competition's international jury.

In view of the large number of entries, the jury has compiled a "recommended list of good entries" that did not reach the finals. The list include Faces of Cherubim by Poland’s Michał Ziółkowski.

Uuno Klami, after whom the competition is named, was regarded as "one of the most outstanding Finnish composers of the post-Sibelius era." He died in 1961 at the age of 60.
