The 55-year-old director, who has deep Polish roots, has fulfilled his parents' long-held wish for him to reclaim his heritage, Polish state news agency PAP reported on Wednesday.

"Yes, I can confirm that Mr. Darren Aronofsky officially became a Polish citizen a month ago," Marcin Mamiński, a lawyer who assisted Aronofsky with the process, told Polish newspaper Wprost.

The citizenship process, typically taking four to five years, was expedited due to Aronofsky's Polish ancestry. His grandmother emigrated from Poland to the United States decades ago.

"It was the desire of Aronofsky's parents that he would one day become Polish," Mamiński said.

Aronofsky, acclaimed for his surreal, psychological and often disturbing films, has now added a new chapter to his storied career by reconnecting with his Polish heritage.

Aronofsky's Hollywood career includes films such as Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The FountainBlack Swan and The Whale.

His work has earned him numerous accolades, including the Golden Lion in Venice for The Wrestler in 2008 and a special award for The Whale in 2022.

In 2011, he was nominated for an Academy Award for directing Black Swan, starring Oscar-winner Natalie Portman.

Aronofsky is not the only American filmmaker with Polish ties. Actor Jesse Eisenberg, known for The Social Network, has also been pursuing Polish citizenship.

Born in New York, Eisenberg's ancestry traces back to Poland, with family connections in the cities of Szczecin, Zamość and Lublin.

Eisenberg has revealed that his application for Polish citizenship, submitted nearly a year ago, is nearing completion.

"Apparently, all the paperwork has already been submitted and I'm waiting for the final signature," he was quoted as saying.
