"Heweliusz": New series depicts Poland's biggest maritime disaster

Polish director Jan Holoubek has wrapped up production on a film about the tragic sinking of the ferry Jan Heweliusz, which went down in the Baltic Sea in January 1993 while travelling from Świnoujście, Poland to Ystad, Sweden. Netflix will release the film in 2025.

"Heweliusz" is a five-part series based on the tragic sinking of the ferry Jan Heweliusz, which occurred over 30 years ago in the cold waters of the Baltic Sea.

The disaster, which remains one of the largest in the history of Polish maritime, captivated the entire nation and received extensive media coverage across Europe and Scandinavia, given its international context.

The series focuses on a faithful portrayal of the accident, utilizing innovative filmmaking techniques and advanced technology to realistically depict the catastrophic events.

Filming took place in various locations, including the Baltic Sea region, Świnoujście, Pomorze, and Warsaw, with some scenes shot in Brussels at Europe's largest water tank facility designed specifically for the series.

Supported by Netflix, the project aims to present this significant maritime tragedy with the highest degree of accuracy, with its release scheduled for 2025.
