This year, Poland is focusing entirely on women, featuring painter Joanna Karpowicz and children's comic author Berenika Kołomycka. Both artists are graduates of the Academy of Fine Arts.
As explained by the exhibition curator Krystyna Połtowicz from the Polish Institute Brussels:
We wanted to do something different from last year, when we had a male lineup. This year, we chose outstanding Polish female artists. They are exceptional because they navigate between challenging topics and themes that remain accessible to children.
Joanna Karpowicz is showcasing her artbook featuring a series of paintings about Anubis, the Egyptian deity with a jackal's head, symbolizing transformation and rebirth.
The artist brought her original works to the festival, focusing mainly on paintings, as she feels more fluent in this medium than in comics. Karpowicz encourages viewers to create their own stories about the character of Anubis in their imagination.
Berenika Kołomycka, a creator of children's comics, will present her series "Malutki Lisek i Wielki Dzik" at the festival.
In an interview with Polish Radio, she described her comics as poetically reflecting on friendship, adventures, and emotions, highlighting the joy she finds in creating her sincere stories.
The BD Comic Strip Festival 2024 will take place from Friday, September 6, to Sunday, September 8, in Brussels.
