In its profile of Gdańsk, CNN Travel writes that "it is perhaps most famous for being the location where World War II officially began, as well as the birthplace of the Solidarity movement, which played an important role in the collapse of communism in Poland."

CNN Travel adds that Gdańsk, which was completely rebuilt after World War II, has emerged as “one of Poland’s most beautiful and colorful cities.”

Its attractions include “the Museum of the Second World War, a towering prism situated along the city’s waterfront, the 14th-century Artus Court and the Old Town’s St. Mary’s Church, thought to be one of the largest brick churches in the world standing at 78 meters (256 feet) high.”

CNN Travel notes that the European Commission’s Report on the Quality of Life in European Cities last year ranked Gdańsk as one of the best cities in which to live, "with the majority of its residents being satisfied with their living conditions."
