An unusual discovery has emerged near the town of Jarocin in Poland’s Wielkopolska region: a private collector, operating under an official permit, unearthed a small bronze figurine believed to depict Mars, the Roman god of war.

Experts are now studying the piece to determine its precise age, with two possibilities under discussion: it may date from the 2nd or 3rd century CE, or it could be a later replica from the late 19th or early 20th century.

According to the Regional Heritage Conservator for Wielkopolska, Mars figurines have been found in Poland before—chiefly in the Pomerania region—but never in Wielkopolska.

If confirmed to be an original artifact from Roman times, this discovery would be “priceless” and mark the region’s first documented example of such a find.

Specialists in antiquities are currently conducting research to ascertain the figurine’s age. Should it prove to be genuinely ancient, a conservators’ commission—including ministry-appointed experts and museum professionals—will be convened to assess its significance.

In the coming weeks, scholars hope to determine whether this is yet another trace of Roman culture on Polish soil or a curiosity from just over a century ago.
