Set in post-war Ukraine, the 20-minute film follows Olena, a 34-year-old Ukrainian woman who travels with her eight-year-old daughter Kira and boyfriend Timur to a small town in eastern Ukraine.
She plans to collect DNA test results confirming that her husband, who went missing during the war, is indeed dead.
Confronted with the reality of exhumed bodies, victims of the Russian aggression, Olena is facing a choice between her present life and a world that has ceased to exist.
People and Things is directed by Damian Kosowski, 31, a graduate of the Fine Arts Academy and the National Film School in Łódź. He also wrote the film’s screenplay during the War on Screen Fabrique 2021/22 grant programme.
The L.A. Shorts International Film Festival is officially recognized by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences and so People and Things stands the chance to receive an Oscar nomination.
