Three Poles—Jan Widlarz, Andrzej Wierciński and Krzysztof Wierciński—were also scheduled to perform on the opening day.

Andrzej Wierciński, 29, is one of several contestants making a comeback to the Warsaw event.

In 2015, he advanced to the second stage of the competition, and in 2021 he reached the third stage.

His younger brother Krzysztof is 22.

Eighty-four pianists from 19 countries are taking part, including 28 from China, 13 from Japan and 13 from Poland.

In the first stage, contestants perform a recital consisting of an etude, a nocturne, a waltz and one additional work chosen from Chopin’s ballades, the Barcarolle or the Fantasy in F minor.

Forty pianists will move on to the second stage.

The competition jury is chaired by American pianist Garrick Ohlsson, who won the Warsaw competition in 1970 and is the first foreigner to hold the post in the event’s nearly 100-year history.

Ohlsson told Poland’s PAP news agency that serving as jury chair was a great honour.

He said he frequently performs in Poland, has developed a strong bond with Polish audiences, and feels a deep emotional attachment to the country.

Ohlsson was 22 when he won in Warsaw, an achievement he said opened many doors, leading to dozens of concerts at prestigious venues around the world, including cities such as Berlin, London, Vienna, Paris, New York and Tokyo.

The 17-member jury also includes past Warsaw winners Dang Thai Son (1980) and Yulianna Avdeeva (2010), along with internationally acclaimed pianists Nelson Goerner, Kevin Kenner, Robert McDonald, Krzysztof Jabłoński, Piotr Paleczny and Ewa Pobłocka, as well as Chopin scholar John Rink and British music critic John Allison.

The prizewinners will be announced on October 20.
