According to Professor Stanisław Mazur, a local official and former rector of the Cracow University of Economics, De Niro first visited Kraków 40 years ago.

As De Niro has often highlighted in interviews that one of his favourite films is The Saragossa Manuscript by Polish director Wojciech Has with music composed by Kraków-born composer Krzysztof Penderecki. For this reason, Mazur presented the actor with a vinyl of the score.
