Venice Biennale opens amid protests against Russia

The 61st Venice Biennale opened on Saturday amid protests over Russia's presence at one of the world's most important art events.

The international exhibition is set to feature around 100 national pavilions this year.

However, it has been overshadowed by controversy after organisers allowed Russia to return despite its ongoing full-scale war in Ukraine.

The opening of the Russian pavilion earlier this week drew strong protests.
