The 12th Tram-EM competition will be held in central Warsaw as part of celebrations marking 160 years of tram service in the Polish capital.

The event will also coincide with the city's Public Transport Days.

The European championships have been held since 2012, with Dresden, Germany hosting the inaugural event.

Last year, Vienna hosted the first World Tram Drivers' Championships and awarded Warsaw the right to stage this year's European competition.

The contest will take place on tram tracks along Marszalkowska Street near Defilad Square in the city centre.

Participants will compete in events testing precision and concentration, with speed also playing a key role.

Each city will be represented by a two-person team consisting of one male and one female tram driver.

In addition to host Warsaw, Poland will be represented by the western city of Gorzów Wielkopolski, whose team won this year's national championships in Poznań.

Teams will also come from London, Vienna, Sofia, Zagreb, Prague, Odense, Tampere, Lyon, Barcelona, Rotterdam, Luxembourg, Riga, Frankfurt, Oslo, Oradea, Bratislava, Edinburgh, Zurich, Gothenburg, Istanbul, Kyiv, Budapest and Milan.

Melbourne will be the only non-European city competing.

At the end of the championships, Warsaw will hand over hosting duties to another European city.

Warsaw Tramways CEO Wojciech Bartelski said the competition would provide an opportunity to showcase the skills and dedication of tram drivers as well as the city's tram network.

Warsaw has more than 350 kilometres of tram tracks and more than 450 trams in operation, he said.
