Zofia Anna Olesik, one of the Polish participants in the competition, will perform Wieniawski's Violin Concerto in D minor with the Poznań Philharmonic, conducted by its music director Łukasz Borowicz.

Olesik, a student at the Poznań Music Academy, has performed across Europe and in the United States. She has appeared as a soloist with the Lithuanian National Philharmonic, the State Symphony Orchestra of Armenia and the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra.

This year, she received a grant from the Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation.

The concert also includes the overture to The Castle at Czortsztyn, an opera by Polish composer Karol Kurpiński (1785-1857).

Fifty violinists under 30 will take part in this year's Wieniawski Competition. They were selected from more than 250 applicants based on video recordings submitted as part of the application process.

The Wieniawski Competition is the world's oldest violin competition.

First held in Warsaw in 1935, it moved to Poznań after a 17-year break and has been held there since 1952, usually every five years. The upcoming competition, which opens on October 8, will be the 17th edition.

Past winners have included David and Igor Oistrakh, Ida Haendel, Ginette Neveu, Bartłomiej Nizioł and Veriko Tchumburidze.

Henryk Wieniawski, the Polish virtuoso after whom the competition is named, was a child prodigy who entered the Paris Conservatory at age 8.

He is widely regarded as one of the greatest violinists of the 19th century after Niccolò Paganini. He died in 1880 at the age of 45.

In 2010, the Polish parliament hosted the Warsaw Philharmonic, conducted by Antoni Wit, with pianist Piotr Paleczny performing Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor to mark the 200th anniversary of the composer's birth.
