Proceeds from the fundraiser, which was held on Poland's Mother’s Day, will benefit the National Children’s Hospital in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
First Lady, Lewandowski, Świątek donate items for Polish Radio auction
The day-long event on Polish Radio 1 saw items from some of Poland’s most famous personalities go under the hammer.
A silver necklace donated by First Lady Agata Kornhauser-Duda fetched the highest amount, selling for PLN 9,000 (EUR 1,955).
Meanwhile, a signed shirt from football ace Robert Lewandowski went for a hammer price of PLN 6,500 (EUR 1,410).
A canvas by surrealist painter Zdzisław Beksiński sold for an identical sum.
Bidders also bought an autographed chess set from grandmaster Jan Krzysztof Duda (EUR 1,300), a signed tennis ball donated by Poland's world No. 1 Iga Świątek (EUR 760), and an autographed baton from conductor Adam Sztaba (EUR 240), among other items.
Concert for Ukraine
As a follow-up to the fundraiser, Polish Radio is staging a special concert for Ukraine at its Lutosławski Studio in Warsaw on Sunday, May 29.
Aired live on Polish Radio 1, the polskieradio.pl website and the public broadcaster's social media channels from 7 p.m., the event will bring together Ukraine-themed performances from diverse acts.
The list of performers features the Polish Radio Orchestra in Warsaw; Oleksandra Zaitseva and Dmytro Tavanets, known as the Kyiv Piano Duo; and Krajka, a Ukrainian folk singers’ band from the southeastern Polish city of Przemyśl that includes refugee children, organisers said.
Polish Radio stands with Ukraine
Thursday’s auction and the accompanying concert represent yet another Polish Radio initiative for Poland’s war-torn eastern neighbour, executives said.
In March, the public broadcaster held a benefit concert for Ukraine, while last month it helped the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra prepare for a European tour, the IAR news agency reported.
Friday is day 93 of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Poland on Friday reported it had welcomed almost 3.64 million refugees fleeing Russia's war on Ukraine.
