Jacek Mikołajczyk, who directs the show and is the translator of the lyrics, has told the media that he expects Matilda to become the company’s flagship production for years to come.
The musical's story centres on Matilda, an extraordinary girl with a vivid imagination, intelligence and psychokinetic powers, who dares to take a stand and overcomes obstacles caused by her family and school.
Mikołajczyk added that he toyed with the idea of producing “Matilda” in Warsaw after seeing its Royal Shakespeare Company production in London, where it has been presented for over a decade, with a short break for the lock down.
He recalled that after its world premiere in England in November 2010, Matilda was produced on New York’s Broadway in April 2013. The musical has won seven Olivier Awards in the UK and five Tony Awards in the United States.
“Matilda the Musical” is based on Roald Dahl’s children’s novel of the same name. It was adapted for the stage by Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin.
