Mel C, also known as Melanie C, wrote in a Twitter post that she would not be able to perform at the bash in southern Poland on December 31.
The British singer pointed to “some issues" that "do not align with the communities” she supports, which she said was why she decided to scrap her plans of singing at the “New Year’s Eve of Dreams” event set to be held by the Polish public television broadcaster.
Although Mel C did not specify what exactly prompted her withdrawal from the event, Polish daily Rzeczpospolita speculates it has much to do with a flurry of comments criticising her for partnering up with TVP.
Under an Instagram post announcing her participation in the event, internet users accused Poland’s public TV broadcaster of homophobia and anti-LGBT bias.
This is believed to have discouraged Mel C, who last year was presented with the Celebrity Ally prize at the British LGBT Awards for her unwavering support of the LGBTQ+ community.
Mel C rose to stardom as one of the five members of the Spice Girls, alongside Victoria Beckham (née Adams), Mel B, Emma Bunton and Geri Halliwell.
Since she parted ways with the popular group in 1999, she has pursued a solo career, occasionally teaming up with her former band members.
