The competition was announced by Deputy Prime Minister Piotr Gliński on Friday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
Meeting the media at Warsaw’s Palace on the Isle, Gliński said: “We are launching a competition for the architectural design of the new building for the Polish Royal Opera.”
Gliński, who is also Poland’s culture minister, told reporters: “It’s fitting that a city that has been developing for years should have an additional arts building, one that is modern and arguably much needed.”
He said: “Attendances at the National Opera, the Warsaw Chamber Opera and the Royal Opera show that Polish people love culture. They also love musical theatre and opera.”
He added: “We must make new investments in this field, because that’s what our residents, our fellow citizens expect.”
Gliński said the government had already selected the site for the new Polish Royal Opera building, and “all the procedures are prepared.”
He added: “At this stage, we need a good idea for this hopefully marvellous opera house. It is set to be up to 18,000 square metres in size, so it will be a small or medium-sized opera.”
The new Polish Royal Opera house will be located on the grounds of Warsaw’s Royal Łazienki Park, the PAP news agency reported.
