The sad news was announced by his wife Anna Gaszyńska.
“Despite the loving care he received, Marek Gaszyński died today in the hospital … He loved music, he loved life and the company of friends. A wonderful man, husband, father, and grandfather died. He devoted his entire professional life to Polish Radio”, Gaszyńska wrote.
Marek Gaszyński was born on 14 June 1939 in Warsaw. In 1962, he began working for Polish Radio. He made music broadcasts and was also the author of articles on music in the daily and music press.
In 1964, Gaszyński began writing song lyrics. He was the author of the lyrics of one of the most famous songs by the legendary Polish bard Czesław Niemen titled "Dream of Warsaw," which is now the unofficial anthem of Legia Warsaw football club fans.
The song was famously covered by Metallica and Coldplay.
Songs with Gaszyński's lyrics were also performed by wildly popular Polish performers, such as Czerwone Gitary (“Nie zadzieraj nosa” – “Don’t stick your nose up”), Wojciech Gąssowski (“Gdzie się podziały tamte prywatki” - “Where have those parties gone”), Breakout (“Wołanie przez Dunajec” – “Calling across the Dunajec river”) and Halina Frąckowiak (“Za mną nie oglądaj się” – “Don’t look back at me”).
In all, Gaszyński wrote lyrics to more than 150 Polish songs.
