The Polish soup, described as having a "distinctively sour taste," owes its flavour to "sour leavening, or the fermentation of bread and rye flour."
Among its ingredients one can find meat, such as sausages, bacon or ham, as well as vegetables and mushrooms, the TasteAtlas website wrote.
The site also noted that the soup has certain variations across the regions of Poland, adding that it is at times served in an edible bowl made of bread.
Żurek, which is considered one of the most traditional Easter dishes in Poland, is also popular in Belarus.
For those gourmets who would like to savour a bowl of Żurek, the TasteAtlas website recommended five Polish restaurants, including Kraków’s Wesele and Stary Dom in Warsaw.
Meanwhile, Tonkotsu ramen, a Japanese soup that has gained global traction in recent years, emerged as the winner, while Turkiye’s lentil soup called Mercimek çorbası claimed the remaining spot on the podium.
Another Polish soup that also made the list was broth, or rosół, which came in at 39th place and was praised by the TasteAtlas website for its "comforting" qualities.
