Details of the International Competition of Polish Music event were unveiled at a news conference in Warsaw on Tuesday, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
Deputy Culture Minister Wanda Zwinogrodzka told reporters that the International Competition of Polish Music, now in its third year, is designed to showcase the “lesser known currents of Poland’s 19th and 20th century musical heritage."
The annual event aims to “bring this music to the Polish audience, as well as popularise it among foreign artists,” Zwinogrodzka said.
She added: “This competition fits into our wider effort to popularise Polish music, particularly the lesser known works. This applies especially to the Polish composers of the 19th century, who often couldn’t promote their music when Poland was under foreign rule. Many of these works weren’t even published.”
Zwinogrodzka also said that the event would showcase young talent from many countries.
She told the news conference: “It is our hope that many spectacular careers will be launched in Rzeszów.”
3rd International Competition of Polish Music
The 2023 International Competition of Polish Music is set to feature some 100 acts from 10 countries, including Poland, Ukraine, Germany, South Korea and Japan, organisers said.
The contest will run in two categories, pianists and chamber ensembles, the IAR news agency reported.
Participants have been encouraged to choose from among the works of more than 60 Polish composers, including Grażyna Bacewicz, Krzysztof Penderecki and Maria Szymanowska, as well as Roman Maciejewski, Zygmunt Stojowski and Henryk Pachulski, according to organisers.
The winners will receive cash prizes of more than EUR 100,000, as well as many exciting concert opportunities, the Polish culture ministry said.
Co-financed by Poland's central government and regional authorities, the 2023 International Competition of Polish Music will be held at the Podkarpacka Philharmonic in Rzeszów under the auspices of President Andrzej Duda, the IAR news agency reported.
Polish Radio is a media partner of the event.
