The "What you can't see" exhibition tells the story of how, for the first time in four centuries, the statue has been taken down for an in-depth analysis by a dedicated interdisciplinary team.

Organized by the Polonika Institute, the exhibition promises to not only showcase the storied statue but also the comprehensive range of restoration techniques applied, from archival research to advanced 3D laser scanning.

Dorota Janiszewska-Jakubiak, Director of the Polonika Institute, said: "The exhibition reveals the complexity of the entire research project, including extensive archival searches, stone condition assessments, and a striking 3D laser scanning of the entire chapel and the Sorrowful Christ."

The urgency for this conservation work emerged in 2021 when a piece of the sculpture's halo was found outside the chapel. Although initial plans were to restore the sculpture in Lviv, the ongoing Russian aggression in Ukraine necessitated its transfer to Poland for the restoration process.

The Sorrowful Christ was a centerpiece of the Mannerist tomb chapel of Lviv's notable Boim merchant family and was built between 1609-1611.

The exhibition opens on Tuesday and will run for a month.
