This historical epic, delving into the January Uprising of 1863, not only revives the tales of 19th-century Polish heroes but also resonates with contemporary issues in the wake of recent geopolitical tensions.

The film, a first of its kind in three decades, promises to rekindle the almost forgotten theme of the January Uprising, a significant but rarely depicted event in Polish history.

Syka, inspired by the lack of cinematic representation of this era, began working on the film in December 2020. He told state news agency PAP that the meticulous recreation of the 19th-century atmosphere, encompassing costumes and scenery, presented a considerable challenge but was crucial for authenticity.

Sebastian Fabijański leads a stellar cast in the role of Rev. Brzóska, with a supporting ensemble including Olgierd Łukaszewicz, Daniel Olbrychski, Karolina Szymczak, Ksawery Szlenkier, Cezary Pazura, and Ewa Szykulska.

Olbrychski, returning to Polish cinema after a long hiatus, felt a personal connection to the project, citing his family's historical involvement in the uprising.

"For years, I thought that Polish cinema didn't need me anymore … When the director approached me with a proposal to star in a film about the January Uprising, I thought it was a question of family honor, because my great-grandfather on my mother's side, Adam Sołonowicz, had fought in Podlasie," Olbrychski told PAP.

The film's narrative revolves around Rev. Brzóska, a clergyman who becomes a military leader, showcasing the dichotomy of his character - a man of faith who takes up arms.

The film also pays homage to the women of the uprising, blending the stories of Anna Konarzewska and Anna Henryka Pustowójtówna, portrayed by Karolina Szymczak. In contrast, the antagonist, a Russian officer suppressing the uprising, is played by Ukrainian-Polish actor Wiaczesław Boguszewski.
