The all-Polish programme includes String Quartet No. 7 Op. 59 by Mieczysław Weinberg (1919-1996), String Quartet by Witold Lutosławski (1913-1994), and String Quintet in D minor Op. 3 by Witold Maliszewski (1873-1939).
Maliszewski was Lutosławski’s teacher of composition at the Warsaw Conservatory in the 1930s. In the performance of his piece, the Silesian String Quartet will be joined by Swedish cellist Mats Lidström.
Monday’s concert will be live streamed on Wigmore Hall’s page in HD. The video will be available on demand for 90 days after the date of the broadcast.
Founded in 1978 in the southern Polish city of Katowice, the Silesian String Quartet has given more than 1,000 concerts, including in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan and Hong Kong, performing in such prestigious venues as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Konzerthaus in Vienna, Salle Pleyel in Paris, and New York’s Carnegie Hall.
Its repertoire includes more than 400 pieces of chamber music, most of which are by 20th- and 21st-century composers. It has premiered over 100 works by Polish and international composers.
The current members of the Silesian String Quartet are Szymon Krzeszowiec and Arkadiusz Kubica (violin), Łukasz Syrnicki (viola) and Piotr Janosik (cello).
