The event at the city's Lincoln Center arts complex opened with a screening of the director's 1962 film How to Be Loved.

The movie is regarded as one of Has’ masterpieces and a major achievement of the Polish film industry.

The retrospective traces Has' cinematic legacy and includes films such as The Saragossa Manuscript, The Hourglass Sanatorium, The Noose, Farewells, The Doll, and Codes.

Some of the screenings will be introduced by Annette Insdorf, an American cinema historian and author of the study Intimations: The Cinema of Wojciech Has.

Often described as a visionary of Polish cinema, Has was on the faculty of the famous National Film School in Łódź, central Poland, for several decades, serving as its rector from 1990 to 1996.

He died in 2000 at the age of 75.

The event at New York's Lincoln Center runs until March 31.
