The exhibition showcases 30 of the 100 images from the album “The Color of the 1944 Uprising: Photos of Fighting Warsaw.”

The exhibition launch is set for 5:00 PM along Ujazdowskie Avenue. The series of photos, which have been meticulously colorized, captures the panorama of Warsaw from August to early October 1944, depicting various scenes of the city during the uprising.

Joanna Jastrzębska-Woźniak, Head of the Iconography and Photography Department at the Warsaw Uprising Museum, emphasized the emotional impact of these colorized images, particularly on younger generations.

“When we embark on colorizing historical photos, we strive to thoroughly research the everyday objects and military artifacts depicted to maintain historical accuracy,” she explained. She noted that while the original black-and-white images remain the scientific source, colorization adds a contemporary and emotionally engaging dimension.

The selection of images was curated by renowned photojournalist and World Press Photo laureate Chris Niedenthal. He highlighted that the use of advanced graphic techniques, with attention to detail, created a contemporary effect.

“I focused on the content of the photos rather than form, as there was no time for composition during the Uprising,” Niedenthal remarked. He also noted that color reveals nuances not visible in black-and-white prints. “The subtle, delicate approach to colorization has created beautiful, vivid photographs from a tragic time,” Niedenthal said.

The exhibition, organized by the Warsaw Uprising Museum, will be on display until September 29.
