A Polish-Danish-Swedish co-production, The Girl with the Needle premiered at this year’s Cannes Festival.
The film is set in post-World War I Copenhagen. Its protagonist Karoline is a young factory worker. When she finds herself unemployed, abandoned and pregnant, she meets Dagmar, a charismatic woman running an underground adoption agency that helps mothers find foster homes for their unwanted children.
Press material for the film describes it as “a fairytale about a horrible truth” and a story “about a woman struggling to find love and a sense of morality.”
In addition to von Horn and co-producer Mariusz Włodarski from Lava Films, the Polish team included cinematographer Michał Dymek, production manager Luiza Skrzek, editor Agnieszka Glińska, production designer Jagna Dobesz and costume designer Małgorzata Fudala.
Most of the filming took place in Poland.
Von Horn is a Swedish-Polish director and scriptwriter. Born in Göteborg, Sweden, in 1983, he graduated from the National Film School in Poland’s Łódż in 2013 and subsequently settled in Poland.
The winners of 2024 European Film Awards will be announced at a ceremony in Lucerne, Switzerland, on December 7.
