“Poland is an important country in the EU … I will present elements of my strategic agenda for the Commission,” von der Leyen told reporters before the talks in Warsaw, as quoted by Poland’s PAP news agency.
Morawiecki was cited as saying that the talks would focus on the staffing of European Commission positions, including the possible appointment of a Polish commissioner.
“We would like to get a significant portfolio, important for the EU and reflecting the significance of Poland in the EU,” Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz told PAP on Thursday.
“We are perceived as a strong, economically developing country with its own vision of the EU,” he added.
Germany’s von der Leyen was this month elected as the next president of the European Commission.
EU leaders in early July named the former German defence minister as their choice to helm the European Commission after opposition by countries including Poland to socialist-backed Dutch contender Frans Timmermans.
