The detained official, who has been identified only as “Sławomir N.” under Polish privacy laws, served as transport minister in Poland’s former Civic Platform-led government from 2011 to 2013, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported on Monday.
He then headed Ukraine’s State Road Agency (Ukravtodor) from 2016 to 2019.
Sławomir N. was once a lawmaker and right-hand man to Polish centrist Prime Minister Donald Tusk, broadcaster TVP Info reported.
Investigators said the suspect was expected to face charges of corruption, money laundering and leading an organised crime group.
Two other suspects have also been detained in the case, according to Stanisław Żaryn, spokesman for Poland’s security services chief.
They were named as “Dariusz Z.,” a former commander of Poland’s elite GROM special forces unit, and “Jacek P.,” a businessman based in the Baltic city of Gdańsk.
