Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on Tuesday said the government would increase spending on various policy areas, including health and roads, amid higher-than-expected budget revenues this year, the state PAP news agency reported.

Morawiecki told a news conference the Cabinet was updating the 2021 budget as “much more money than expected,” close to PLN 80 billion (EUR 17.3 billion) more, had flowed into the state coffers.

GDP growth is also set to surpass expectations, at 4.8-4.9 percent this year, he said.

The extra revenue is mainly due to “anti-crisis measures, good performance of businesses and sound budgetary policy,” Morawiecki added.

He announced that the government would pour an additional PLN 1 billion into the healthcare system, which he said "has already seen record levels of funding this year."

The fresh funds will be spent on medical procedures, staff salaries and medical universities, Morawiecki told reporters.

Meanwhile, public sector workers are set to receive higher bonuses, he added, while “an additional PLN 10 billion will be spent on roads and railway lines, to make Polish society more mobile.”

The Cabinet has also set aside PLN 4 billion for local governments and earmarked fresh funds for new disability policy measures and projects in water supply and sewerage management as well as farming, including efforts to combat African swine fever, Morawiecki said.
