Officers say they have stopped 1,360 drunk drivers during their annual Operation Torch road safety campaign, which started on Friday and runs until Tuesday evening.

Meanwhile, 502 drivers lost their licences over the long weekend for exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 kph in built-up areas, traffic police spokesman Robert Opas told reporters on Tuesday.

All Saints' Day on November 1 and All Souls' Day on November 2 are when millions of Poles visit the graves of their loved ones, often travelling hundreds of kilometres to their home towns.

Polish lawmakers on Friday overwhelmingly approved a plan to tighten the country’s traffic laws in a bid to improve road safety.
