Diplomatic relations between the European Union and Georgia were established after the post-Soviet state gained independence.

On Wednesday, the European Commission is expected to present a report on Georgia's progress toward EU membership. In 2022, the EU executive identified 12 areas in which it said Georgia needed to carry out reforms.

This year is crucial for Georgia. At the end of 2023, the EU's 27 members must decide whether or not to grant the former Soviet republic candidate country status.

The decision is anxiously awaited by the 3.7 million Georgians, more than three-quarters of whom say they want to join the European bloc.

According to a report published by the Schuman Foundation, entitled “Georgia: Terrible Dilemma for Europe,” giving Georgia EU candidate country status would reward and strengthen a government whose policy of breaking with the West is clearly set to continue.

To refuse it, on the other hand, would be to risk arousing popular anger with serious consequences.
