Heads of State and Governments emphasized the need to rethink global governance and create a fairer, more inclusive multilateral system that will “benefit all countries” rather than “increase the power of a few”, as the United Nations-sponsored  Summit of the Future concluded on Monday.

Warning that inaction could lead the planet “to a dark future”, they stressed the need for Security Council reform, greater youth engagement in decision-making and bold actions to address the adverse impacts of climate change.

Speaking at the event on Monday, Polish president Andrzej Duda said  that Russia’s actions pose a significant threat to international security.

“We cannot accept that those who challenge the order based on the U.N. Charter are gaining strength”, Duda said.

“As a permanent member of the Security Council, Russia should uphold the U.N. Charter and international law,” he added.

“However, by attacking a sovereign state, it has relinquished its responsibility”, Duda stated, arguing  that, as a result, “Russia can no longer claim to be safeguarding the security of the international system and that of other nations.”
