EU lawmakers back overhaul of air passenger rights

The European Parliament has approved a major overhaul of EU air passenger rights, preserving compensation for flight delays of more than three hours while simplifying and automating the claims process.

The reform introduces nearly 30 new passenger protections, including free seat assignments for families, transparent fares that include carry-on baggage, and a ban on fees for correcting passengers' names or issuing digital boarding passes.

The measure still requires final approval by the EU Council and will take effect one year after its publication in the EU's Official Journal.
