On Wednesday, public health authorities confirmed 794 new fatalities related to COVID-19, the most since April 8, when the country reported its highest daily toll of 954 deaths related to the coronavirus.

More than 75 percent of those who died on Wednesday were unvaccinated, Deputy Health Minister Waldemar Kraska told reporters.

“Those deaths could have been avoided," Kraska said as the country grapples with the delta variant of the coronavirus and braces for the new highly contagious omicron variant.

He added: "Those people could have stayed alive if they had got a jab … So, those who are still hesitant about whether to vaccinate should reconsider if it’s worth risking an infection that leads to death."
