Following a two-year break, the NATO-Russia Council meeting in Brussels, initiated by NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, came in the wake of a series of talks between Washington and Moscow, triggered in part by an aggressive buildup of Russian troops on Ukraine’s borders.
Ahead of the talks, Stoltenberg said he did not expect any concrete solutions, but added that such consultations were necessary.
“I don’t think we can expect that these meetings will solve all the issues,” he told reporters.
“What we are hoping for is that we can agree on a way forward, that we can agree on a series of meetings, that we can agree on a process,” he added.
