The vote is likely to be held in October and Polish opposition parties, including the largest Civic Platform (PO) group and several smaller groupings, are considering joining forces to increase their chances of defeating the ruling conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party and the far-right Confederation group at the ballot box.

At the moment, the opposition, which includes Szymon Hołownia's Poland 2050 group, the Polish People's Party (PSL) and the New Left, is at a crossroads, treading with caution on the political stage as any wrong step could scare their supporters away, commentators say.

Prof. Jarosław Flis, a political scientist at the Jagiellonian University in the southern city of Kraków, breaks down the intricacies of Polish politics in an interview with Radio Poland's Piotr Miszczuk.
