At a bash in Warsaw on Thursday, Radio Poland's Marcin Matuszewski spoke with the promoter behind the event, and with some of the celebrity players invited to take part.
"If you weren't in touch with the world of the royal game for a decade or two, be prepared for quite a shock when you start getting yourself up to speed with the way the chess scene works these days," one insider said.
Another pointed out that chess "is quite a thing" these days among "top social media influencers" in Poland.
Their online chess streams sometimes attract audiences larger than those at Poland's biggest football games, according to experts.
The Radio Poland reporter also discovered that the line between internet celebrity players and major professional chess players can be paper thin and that the two worlds often overlap nowadays.
