Poland battered by storms, lightning strikes

Some 80,000 lightning strikes were recorded in Poland overnight from Thursday to Friday as severe thunderstorms surged through the country amid a heatwave.

Firefighters were called out more than 1,000 times to help deal with the aftermath of extreme weather events during the night.

Various parts of the country were battered by hailstorms and fierce winds that ripped roofs off buildings.

In the village of Aleksandrów in the south-central Świętokrzyskie region, a 76-year-old woman died after being struck by lightning, a police spokeswoman said.
