Over 320,000 work permits were issued to foreigners in Poland last year, yet only 1 percent of them pertained to jobs that are both in shortage and highly skilled, according to the latest report from the Polish Economic Institute.

“Foreigners already based in Poland in significant numbers mainly work in unskilled jobs," said Katarzyna Dębkowska of the Polish Economic Institute.

“This does not mean that these individuals lack qualifications, but rather that their qualifications are recognized only after an appropriate administrative process," she clarified.

Moreover, a key barrier for foreigners seeking to work in skilled professions in Poland is the requirement of knowing Polish at least at a communicative level, according to Dębkowska.

Radio Poland's Michał Owczarek has the story.
