James Vasquez, 47, arrived in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv earlier this month, Poland’s tvp.info website reported on Friday.
The father of four has volunteered to fight against the Russian invaders, drawing on his combat experience in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to tvp.info.
‘It’s in his DNA’
“It's in his DNA,” Vazquez’s wife Tina told Britain's Daily Mail newspaper.
“He approached me, came to me after work, and said, ‘We need to talk, I can't watch this on TV, I need to go help these guys,’” Tina said.
“'Go ahead, just make sure you come home,'” she recounted her reply.
“This is what he needs to do, and I need to support him,” Tina told Daily Mail.
Fighting side by side with Ukrainians
Ever since arriving in Ukraine, Vazquez has been fighting shoulder to shoulder with the country’s soldiers to repel Vladimir Putin’s invading army, according to tvp.info.
He has been posting frequent video updates on Twitter, praising the fighting spirit of Ukrainian troops, Daily Mail wrote.
On Thursday, Vasquez shared a video showing the remains of a Russian tank in an undisclosed location, after his unit liberated a village from Russian occupation, tvp.info reported.
The video post has generated 2 million views on Twitter alone, according to the Polish website.
Friday is day 30 of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
