Missiles were apparently fired at the Yavoriv base near the western city of Lviv in the early hours of Tuesday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
‘Air defences worked’
Speaking about the attack, regional governor Makysym Kozytsky said on the social-messaging app Telegram: "According to preliminary information, air defences worked."
His announcement followed reports that a series of up to 10 explosions shook Lviv during the night, with a bright glow illuminating the sky in the western part of the city.
A burning smell later spread through Lviv, the PAP news agency reported.
‘Let's thank those who protect our sky’
Meanwhile, city mayor Andriy Sadovyi said on Facebook he could not confirm any information about a missile strike.
"Let's thank those who protect our sky for this," he added.
In March, a Russian missile attack on Ukraine’s Yavoriv base near Lviv killed dozens and injured hundreds, news outlets reported at the time.
Tuesday is day 83 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
