Sergei Lavrov was due to fly to Belgrade on Monday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

According to a source at the foreign ministry in Moscow, Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Montenegro have closed their airspace to the Russian top diplomat’s aircraft.

“Our diplomacy has yet to master teleportation,” the Russian source said.

The Balkan countries' move is a response to the Kremlin's invasion of Ukraine.

Bulgaria is a member of the European Union, while North Macedonia and Montenegro are candidates to join the bloc.

Russian-Serbian ties

Serbia has close cultural links with Russia and remains friendly with Moscow. It is also heavily dependent on Russian gas.

A candidate to join the EU, it has not taken part in the bloc’s wide-ranging sanctions against Russia for the Kremlin's war on Ukraine.

During a two-day visit to Serbia, Lavrov was scheduled to hold talks with the country’s President Aleksandar Vučić.

Monday is day 103 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
