Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz, France’s President Emmanuel Macron and Italy’s Prime Minister Mario Draghi all plan to travel to Ukraine before the Group of Seven (G7) summit at the end of June, Polish state news agency PAP reported on Sunday, citing Germany’s Bild am Sonntag newspaper.

The trip has not yet been confirmed.

If it goes ahead, it will be the first time these leaders have come to Ukraine since Russia invaded the country on February 24.

Ukraine’s EU bid

It comes after the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited Kyiv on Saturday to discuss Ukraine’s aspirations to become a member of the European Union.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said his country “will do everything” to join the bloc.

Von der Leyen said the EU’s executive would assess Ukraine’s eligibility for EU membership by the end of next week.

If the assessment is positive, the EU’s 27 member countries then need to decide whether to allow Ukraine to start negotiations to join the bloc.

Zelensky said that the admission of Ukraine “can strengthen not only our state, but also the entire European Union."

Sunday is day 109 of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
