"The front line of more than 2,000 km long stands between freedom and tyranny," it said in a tweet.

"In peacetime, a distance such as this can be traveled by car in a day," it added.

"Now a million Ukrainians are holding this line, protecting Europe from the Russian horde," the Ukrainian defence ministry tweeted.

Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov said in an interview published this week that his country was planning to amass a “million-strong army" to retake Russian-held territory in southern Ukraine.

"We have approximately 700,000 in the armed forces and when you add the national guard, police, border guard, we are around a million-strong,” he said in an interview with Britain's The Times newspaper.

Around 37,870 Russian troops have been killed in Ukraine since Vladimir Putin invaded the country in late February, according to Ukrainian military authorities.

The Russians have also lost 1,667 tanks, 3,852 armored fighting vehicles, and 840 artillery systems, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said on Thursday, as cited by the ukrinform.net website.

Other Russian losses in Ukraine include 247 multiple launch rocket systems, 109 anti-aircraft warfare systems, 219 warplanes, 188 helicopters, 15 warships, and 681 unmanned aerial vehicles, ukrinform.net reported.

Thursday was day 141 of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
