As the leaders of countries participating in the new European Political Community gather in Prague, the first question being asked is what the purpose of the new club is.
President Macron, whose idea the club is, said it is an attempt to build a "common strategy" against Russia. Macron has sought to play a leading role in finding a peaceful solution, saying that "Russia must not be humiliated" but his efforts have been rebuffed, with Le Monde referring to him as "Ukraine's most hated ally".
Poland's prime minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, is joining the meetings, as we reported earlier today. The UK's embattled prime minister Liz Truss is attending. She has emphasized that the club "not an EU construct or an EU alternative."
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is giving a video address to the first session.
